Whether it's the banked, wooden track, the pointed, aerodynamic helmets, or the sheer speed of the races, track cycling is a sport laced with iconic quirks, images, and athletes. Though it is technically an optional element of the Commonwealth Games programme, it is thankfully a stalwart of the Games - track cycling has been staged consistently since 1934, and para-track cycling has been included since 2014.
There are many disciplines that take place in track cycling venues - which are called velodromes - and Commonwealth competition is therefore always fierce, particularly in Australia, New Zealand, and England. Of just over 200 gold medals given out since 1934, Australian athletes have claimed more than 100!
