The Auckland Open, known for sponsorship reasons as the ASB Classic, is an annual tennis tournament held at the ASB Tennis Arena in Auckland, New Zealand, in the 2 weeks prior to the Australian Open.
The first edition of the ASB Classic – then the men's and women's Auckland Championship – took place in 1956, on grass courts at the present-day ASB Tennis Arena, before the event switched to hard courts in the 1970's. In 1982, the ASB Classic's men's and women's draws became separate competitions, known individually as the ATP Auckland Open and WTA Auckland Open, but in 2016 the events reunited, once again showcasing the best men's and women's players in an exciting combined tournament. Today, the ASB Classic is still held at its original home, the ASB Tennis Arena, and, as a part of both the ATP 250 and WTA 250 tour levels, consistently attracts a stacked roster of tennis stars. Former men's champions include Roy Emerson, Gustavo Kuerten, and Juan Martin del Potro, whilst former female winners include Marion Bartoli, and Venus and Serena Williams.
