📜 Chesterfield History
The club was originally founded in 1866, although their history potentially stretches back even further, with evidence of a Chesterfield team from 1863. The club has gone through several incarnations in the years since, becoming professional in 1891 when they were known at the time as Chesterfield Town.
The current iteration of the club was formed in 1919, after the previous incarnation were liquidated 4 years prior. Known initially as Chesterfield Municipal, they were formed by Chesterfield Borough Council. However, they became independent in 1920 after both the Football Association and Football League voiced their opposition to the prospect of a council-run club.
Chesterfield became a founding member of the new Football League Third Division North the following year and soon found themselves in the Second Division; their 4th-placed finish in English football's second tier in 1947 remains the highest in their history.
In 1981, the Spireites lifted the Anglo-Scottish Cup, while in 2012 they won the EFL Trophy for the first time.
