Salford Red Devils is a professional rugby league team which competes in the Super League. The club's traditional home colours are black, red, and white, and it plays home matches at the AJ Bell Stadium, also known as the Salford City Stadium.
📜 Salford Red Devils History
Cavendish Football Club, as it was then known, was founded in 1875, growing out of a local boys team which had been formed 2 years prior. The club became known as Salford shortly after its formation, following a move across the River Irwell.
After rugby's "schism" of 1895, Salford did not immediately join the newly-formed Northern Rugby Football Union, but by 1896 the club had joined, travelling to Widnes to play its first competitive match in the new First Division. Salford very swiftly began competing for silverware, finishing as championship runners-up in 3 consecutive seasons (1901-1902, 1902-1903, and 1903-1904), and losing 4 Challenge Cup finals between 1900 and 1906.
In the 1913-1914 season, Salford finally won its first championship, securing the First Division title with a win against Huddersfield in the final. The club continued its success between the wars, winning 3 further championships and its first Challenge Cup prior to 1940.
Following World War Two, the Greater Manchester side had to wait considerably longer to win its next piece of major silverware: it wasn't until the 1973-1974 season that Salford won another championship, though the club followed that long-awaited success up with another First Division title in the 1975-1976 season.
Like many fellow English rugby league clubs, Salford rebranded in preparation for the Super League era, becoming known as the Salford Reds in 1995, and then changing this to Salford City Reds in 1999. In 2013 the club formerly adopted the "Red Devils" moniker, which it shares with local association football team Manchester United. In the Super League era, major trophies have again been hard for Salford to come by, however recent notable campaigns include the 2019 season, in which the club reached the Super League grand final, and the 2020 campaign, in which Salford lost in the Challenge Cup final.
