St. George Illawarra Dragons Matchups
Due to the St. George Illawarra Dragons beginning life as 2 separate sides, which then merged in 1998, the present-day team has largely inherited the combined rivals of both pre-merger teams.
As the more successful pre-merger side, St. George has arguably had a greater impact on the joint-venture's current reputation, with many of the team's traditional rivals having been inherited by the present-day club. The Dragons enjoyed rivalries with teams such as the Brisbane Broncos, the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, the Parramatta Eels, the South Sydney Rabbitohs, the Sydney Roosters, and the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks - arguably St. George's most fierce pre-merger rivals.
Illawarra's historical rivals, meanwhile, include the Canberra Raiders and the Newcastle Knights. Illawarra also had a pre-merger rivalry with the Brisbane Broncos.
In recent seasons, a post-merger rivalry has also developed with Melbourne Storm.
About St. George Illawarra Dragons
The St. George Illawarra Dragons are an Australian National Rugby League (NRL) side jointly based in the St. George and Illawarra areas of New South Wales.
π St. George Illawarra Dragons History
Forced to combine their resources amidst the fallout of the "Super League War", the battle for Australia's rugby league TV rights, the St. George Dragons and the Illawarra Steelers formed the St. George Illawarra Dragons ahead of the 1999 NRL season. The merger ensured that 2 large fan bases and decades of rugby league history would not be lost.
The joint venture quickly bore fruit, with the Dragons reaching the NRL grand final in their debut season. Though they fell short - losing to Melbourne Storm in front of more than 100,000 fans - the newly-formed club was deemed a success. In 2009, the Dragons finished the regular season as minor premiers, but could not fully capitalise on their success, falling at the semifinal stage. In 2010 the club again finished as minor premiers, but this time they maintained their momentum, thrashing the Sydney Roosters 32-8 in the grand final to win their first, and to date only, NRL title.
The Dragons' traditional home colours are red and white.
