St. Jakob-Park Hotels & Accommodation

As a Swiss city, Basel is relatively expensive compared to the average European city. However, it is considered much more affordable than many others in Switzerland. It has a number of ultra-luxury hotels lined along the Rhine River, and many more luxury and mid-range hotels and apartments dotted throughout.

Those wanting to immerse in Basel’s cultural and historical heritage will feel at home in Altstadt Grossbasel, the old town centre. From here, you can easily walk to all of the city’s top landmarks and museums including Basel Minster, Basel Town Hall, and the Museum of Natural History.

To be within easy reach of the city’s landmarks and attractions without paying a premium for accommodation, stay in Basel-Vorstadt, the neighbourhood encircling the old town. The area itself offers just as much historic character as Altstadt Grossbasel, as well as a number of excellent bars and restaurants.

Although Altstadt Kleinbasel, situated across from Altstadt Grossbasel on the other side of the Rhine River, is still part of the old town, it is known for its cool modern boutiques, galleries, and restaurants, providing the best of both old and new Basel. The neighbourhood is also renowned for its nightlife, as its streets spill with people from cocktail bars, craft beer pubs, and clubs.

Foodies will feel at home in Basel-Matthaus, a quiet refined neighbourhood west of Altstadt Kleinbasel, which is populated with eateries of all kinds from casual cafes to classic Italian pizzerias and stylish fine-dining restaurants.

Families may prefer the quietude and community atmosphere of Bachletten, a quaint tree-lined neighbourhood located next to Basel Zoo and just a few minutes from the centre by tram.

If transport is a priority, stay in the modern and trendy Gundeldingen where the city’s main train station is located, which provides cross-country links.

As Basel is well-connected by tram, it’s easy to explore the city no matter where you decide to stay.

About St. Jakob-Park

St. Jakob-Park is a football stadium located in Basel, Switzerland. Known to locals by its nickname, "Joggeli," it is the home of FC Basel.

📜 History

The ground opened in 2001, replacing the old St. Jakob Stadium on the same site. It is named after the village on which the site of the stadium now stands, St. Jakob an der Birs. "Joggeli" is the diminutive form of "Jakob" in the local dialect, akin to "Jake."

The stadium's translucent outer layer can be illuminated in different colours; this effect was later emulated at Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena when it was built 3 years later.

As well as regularly hosting Swiss Super League, UEFA Champions League, and UEFA Europa League games over the years, the venue also played host to 6 games at UEFA Euro 2008, including the semifinal between Germany and Turkey, and it also held the 2016 Europa League final between Sevilla and Liverpool.
